What Does Circular Fashion Really Mean?

Fashion today is often seen as a cycle of trends — things come in, go out, and return again. But circular fashion is not about trends. It is about rethinking the entire journey of a garment — from design, to use, to reuse, to regeneration.
At its heart, circular fashion asks: What happens after we are done wearing something?
Instead of letting clothes end up in landfills, circular fashion ensures they stay in the loop through repair, resale, upcycling, or recycling. A saree becoming a quilt, a kurta turning into cushion covers, or a handwoven fabric being re-dyed and re-loved — these are all small acts of circularity.
For India, with its heritage of reusing, passing down, and transforming textiles, circular fashion is not new, like plenty of communities around the world that thrived before the Industrial Revolution. It’s tradition. Our grandmothers practiced it naturally, long before it became a global conversation.
Circular fashion is not just about extending a product’s life. It’s about closing the loop — where fashion is designed to flow like nature, with no waste.
At Kriti Magazine, we believe circular fashion holds the key to honouring our weaves, respecting our artisans, and ensuring our future.
